Drawing wire.-A continuous wire-drawing machine is mounted on a base 10 provided with an extension on which wire storing units of different types may be mounted and coupled to the driving gear of the drawing mechanism. The machine comprises a housing 11 for the drawing capstans 30, dies 37 and idle drums 31, and a housing 15 for the chain driving-mechanism. A chain-drive 53 is taken from the capstan shaft 24 for a shaft 51 which drives through bevel-gearing a bevel-wheel 59 with which a bevel-wheel 69 integral with the wire storage mechanism may be meshed. The shaft 51 carries also a detachable drawing-drum 62. The wire 42 is supplied to the machine over a pulley 40, through a tallow &c. box 38 and thence through a die 39 to a drum 32 secured to a chain-driven shaft 25, from whence the wire is led through the dies 37, and over the drawing-capstans 30 and idle drums 31 to a final die 47. Nozzles 46 supply lubricant to the drawing-capstans. The storage-unit may be a spool 67 driven through spring-pressed friction discs by bevel-gearing from the shaft 68 the whole of the storage-mechanism, including the shaft 68 and its housing 74 being mounted as a unit on a base plate 22 secured to the extension 16 of the machine frame by bolts 19. The wire from the capstan 62 is distributed over the spool 67 by fingers 87 reciprocated in known manner by a right and left handed screw-mechanism 83, 85. When the wire is to be coiled, the spool unit is removed and replaced by a coil winding unit 23, Fig. 3 which also carries a bevel-gear 106 adapted to mesh with the bevel gear 59. When the winding-gear is used the capstan 62 is removed. The coil winding-gear comprises a driven drum 95 with axial grooves to accommodate coil collecting arms 115 hinged to a plate 111 and linked to a slidable member 119 whose weight normally maintains the arms 115 in the expanded position. A swinging arm 122 may be coupled to the plate 111 and lifted by a pneumatic elevator 129 controlled by a handle 128 to lift the coil from the drum 95, the arm 122 then being swung manually and the arms 115 collapsed to deposit the coil as required. Guards are provided for the drum 95, the capstan 62 and for the free end of the shaft 51 when the capstan 62 is removed. The machine is controlled by a clutch lever 134.
