Abstract

303,235. Whatmough, W. A., and Fisher, W. L. Oct. 26, 1927. Addition to 277,526. Spray-carburettors. - The parent Specification describes means for supplying air to a carburettor, in which supplies of warm and cold air are caused to mix and flow past a temperature-sensitive device disposed completely in the path of the mixed warm and cold air, or of the mixture of such air with the fuel, the sensitive device actuating valves to control the proportions of warm and cold air. According to the invention, the sensitive device is so disposed as to lie only partly in the path of the fluids referred to, the other part being shielded from extraneous heat, and the pipe connecting the heat-sensitive chamber to the carburettor, as well as the carburettor itself, may be insulated or formed of heat-insulating material. A conduit 1, Fig. 2, connected to the carburettor has branches 2, 3 for cold and warm air respectively, the flow through these branches being controlled by a hinged valve 11 the spindle 10 of which is connected through linkages 9<a>, 9 - - 5 to the movable end of the temperative-sensitive device 4 the other end of which is secured to the wall of the conduit 1. Another wall of this conduit is bulged as at 12, Fig. 1, and the device 4 is accommodated partly in this bulge. The part 12 is preferably formed of heat-insulating material such as that known under the registered Trade-mark "Bakelite," secured by screws 13, and the remainder of the conduit 1 may be insulated either externally or internally as at 14. The abstraction of heat from or addition thereof to the mixture that has passed the sensitive device may be prevented by lining or covering the carburettor, the inlet manifold and the pipe connecting them to the heat-sensitive chamber by insulating material such as that preferred for the part 12. According to the Provisional Specification an insulating flange or washer may be inserted between the inlet manifold and the carburettor.
