Delivery apparatus; cutting-apparatus ; grappers and gripper mechanism.-In sheet-delivery mechanism for printing-machines in which a delivery carriage conveys the sheet over the pile during its outward travel and allows the sheet to drop on to the pile during its inward movement, a gripper is provided to take the sheets from the carriage and moves outwards, laterally and downwards so as to deposit the sheet on the pile against front and side lays. As shown, Fig. 1, two grippers or sets of grippers moving laterally in opposite directions are adapted to take the two halves of centrally-slit sheets from tapes 31 which unwind from beneath the sheets to allow them to drop on the piles 32, 33. Each gripper 1, 2 is reciprocated in a bracket 4 extending at an angle to and adjustably carried by a transverse shaft 6 oscillated from the main shaft of the machine by means of a crank 10 and link 11. The upper jaw 1 of each gripper is pivoted at 20 to a slide 21 carrying the lower jaw 2, and a spring 24 tends to hold the jaws in contact. As the slide 21 is moved outwardly an adjustable cam 26 on the bracket 4 engages a roller 25 on the jaw 1 so as to release the sheets at any required time. The roller 25 at the same time moves under and tilts a ramp 27 pivoted on the bracket 4 and normally held depressed by a spring 28 attached to an arm 29 thereon. On the inward movement of the slide 21, the roller 25 first rides up the ramp 27 so as to open the gripper to take a shot from the tapes 31 and then passes over the end of the ramp so as to cause the jaws 1, 2 to grip the sheet under the action of the spring 24. The mechanism for reciprocating the slide 21 in the brackets 4 consists of a bar 13 reciprocated axially in lugs 12 on the brackets 4 through a link 19 pivoted bell-crank 18 engaging a grooved member 17 feathered to the shaft 6. Rack members 14 on the bar 13 mesh with toothed sectors 15 serving to oscillate arms 16 slotted to engage pins 22 on the slides 21. In the case of the one gripper or set of grippers, the sector 15 and arm 16 corresponding thereto are fixed to the same shaft 16<a>, but a link 30 and crank 16<b> are interposed to drive the slide 21 of the other gripper or set of grippers.
