Heels, covering and facing; trimming.-Relates to machines for operating on Louis heel breast covering flaps, and consists in constructions wherein a trimming tool for the end of the flap and one or more tools for performing other operations on the flap are arranged on one side of driving means, so that the operator can readily present the flap to the tools in succession. A driven spindle 5 has at one end a brake drum co-operating with a two-part brake applied by hand. On the other side of its driving pulley 7 the shaft carries a milling cutter comprising one member secured to the shaft and provided with teeth 35 between which are teeth on a member slidable along the shaft. The second member engages a yoke 51 engaged by an adjusting screw 59 for varying the width of the combined cutter. Adjacent to the cutter is a flap layer 15 some five inches long formed with flats about its circumference, a corner breaker 17 and a substantially radial surface 21 some 1¥ inches in diameter. The milling cutter is provided with a work guide .comprising a plate 65 pivoted on a spindle 53. A plate 69 also pivoted on the spindle 53 but moving axially along it with the yoke 51, a heel breast engaging bar 67 and a top plate 73. The whole guide is adjustable towards and from the cutter' by a stop 71. A knife is provided for trimming the end of the flap, the cutting edge of the knife 91 comprising a U-shaped portion, forming a tab to cover the central tread surface of the heel, and straight portions at the ends of the U for severing the side portion of the flap in line with the tread surface of the heel. The U- shaped part of the knife may house a slitting' knife 99. The knife is operated by-a lever 86 connected to a treadle. In a modification, for' heels requiring the flaps to be trimmed at the upper surface of the top-piece, the milling cutter, knife 91 and the parts 17, 21 are omitted, since there is no tab to be formed thinned and laid, and the trimming cutter comprises a disc knife 121, Fig. 7, mounted on an eccentric boss 118 and secured by a nut 123 which acts as a work gauge and may be provided with flats for wiping the lower part of the flap to the heel breast. As one part of the cutter becomes blunt, a new portion may be turned to the cutting position after slacking the nut 123. A pin engages one of a series of holes in the cutter to hold it in this adjusted position. An adjustable tread rest 133 and a cutter guard 135 are provided.
