Abstract

302,842. Wasilkowski, F. March 12, 1928. Aircraft shelters are formed of substantially circular form and the roof is supported by a polygonal ring which is formed as a girder member or members capable of resisting bending and compressive stresses and is suspended by cables from a central column. The tower 1 is formed of concrete, wood, or metal, and carries an upper ring 2 to which are fastened double chains 3 carrying at their outer ends a polygonal ring 4 which is stiffened by vertical and horizontal girders 6, 5, respectively. The angular points of the ring are also connected by anchoring cables 7 to a lower ring 14 on the central column, and to prevent rotation alternate points of the ring are connected by double-tie cables 8 to a platform 15 on the central column. Radial lattice girders 10 are linked at their inner ends to the upper ring 2 and at their outer ends by tie-rods 11 to the polygonal ring and are stiffened in pairs by means of lattice girders. The radial girders 10 are arranged between each pair of supporting stays. The arcuate panels I-VIII are formed of canvas or the like, or of upright lattice girders 29, and may be arranged to slide over each other in guides on the ring and lower foundation, and they may be all slidable or only part slidable. A rotary floor 17 may also be provided. In a modification, Fig. 3, the polygonal ring is formed from separate jointed lattice girders 21 suspended as before by double-tie members 20 and stiffened by cross cables 22 connecting alternate joints in the ring. To prevent oscillation and rotation, the cables 23 and 34 are provided connected to the central column, and the covering of the structure is supported by cables 26 connected to the central column, the polygonal ring 21, and uprights 25 supported on the cable. 24 stretched also between the central column and the ring. Further upright suppurts 28 are also provided below the uprights 25 and bear at their lower ends on the anchoring cable 23. The aeroplanes are packed in various ways upon the floor and one method is shown in Fig. 10.
