Abstract

302,324. Compagnie Francaise d'Exploitation des ProcÚdÚs Plinatus. (Assignees of Plinatus, W.). Dec. 14, 1927. [Convention date]. Adhesives.-A method of joining wood, metal, glass &c. together or to fabrics, leather, paper &c., consists in the steps of stirring a cellulose ester or esters with an aqueous emulsion of a highboiling solvent or solvents (such as glyceryl benzoate, diethyl phthalate, di- or tri-butyrin), heating the mixture to evaporate the water, pressing and rolling the resultant powdery material into a thin layer, applying the said layer between the surfaces to be joined and effecting cohesion by pressure and increased temperature, allowing the whole to cool under pressure. The cellulose ester is stated to be in the gel condition. In an example, 100 parts of wet dispersed nitro-cellulose i.e. nitrocellulose stirred with water until in a seemingly swollen condition, is treated with an emulsion of 20-60 parts of diethyl phthalate and 50 parts of water. The mixture is heated until the water evaporates and a powdery mass is obtained. Resins, such as shellac, colophony, Kauri, congo, zanzibar, elemi, pontianak, may be added in powder form to the cellulose ester gel, preferably immediately before use. Specifications 246,272 and 249,600, [both in Class 70, Indiarubber &c.], are referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) describes also a dry binding agent or adhesive comprising one or more cellulose esters containing a high-boiling solvent or solvents in fine distribution therein, with or without additional substances such as resins. In an example, 700 grms. of dry collodion wool, 300 grms. of water and 600 grms. of dibutyrin are kneaded in a vacuum kneader, and the water evaporated under vacuum. The granular product may be rolled to a foil. Other examples, in one of which dammar resin is included, are given. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted-
