Abstract

301,130. Johnson, J. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). Sept. 5, 1927. Hydrocarbons, distilling; hydrogenation, destructive.-Oils are recovered from the residues remaining after the distillation, destructive hydrogenation or similar treatment of carbonaceous materials, by introducing into the residues at over 300‹ C. and under diminished pressure gases or vapours containing liquids of low boiling point in the liquid state, e.g. water, benzene, toluene, alcohol, &c. The liquids are preferably injected in the state of mist, e.g. damp steam, the mist being obtained by cooling the hot vapours until partial condensation takes place. The vapours are preferably introduced into the treatment vessel transversely to the layer of material to be distilled. A distillation residue of the destructive hydrogenation of lignite is distilled between 370‹ and 395‹ C. and 80 millimetres pressure with steam which prior to its admission to the still is cooled so that most of the steam is condensed to water in the form of mist. The residues are treated while flowing in a shallow layer about 3 cms. deep through a wide pipe in which steam jets are arranged transversely to the direction of flow of the residues. Specification 213,267 is referred to.
