Abstract

300,185. Marshall, L. C. Aug. 5, 1927. Piston packing. - Piston-rings for use in internal-combustion engines having cast iron cylinders are made by bending a hard steel wire to circular or elliptical form,' preferably in a. coiling machine, cutting of a single turn to leave the required gap. The wire is formed of 0.5 to 0.75 per cent carbon steel or a steel or similar hardness and may be slightly trapezoidal in section, Fig. 2, becoming rectangular after bending. The rings are flattened in a press and heated to remove helical set while clamped on a mandrel 23, Fig. 16, by means of a sleeve 24. A bar 25 passed through the gaps in the rings. Oblique joints may be formed by means of a grinding wheel or milling cutter 27, Fig. 17, or overlap joints may be provided. Burrs are removed by grinding, the sides of the ring are ground, and the rings are mounted on a mandrel and the peripheries ground.
