Heating by electricity.-Apparatus for sterilizing liquids by heat produced by passage of an alternating current through the liquid comprises non-conducting pipes 8 connecting tanks 1 - - 7 of conducting material, some of the tanks being connected to a single or polyphase alternating supply and others to earth. The pipes and tanks are arranged vertically above one another as in Fig. 1, or in the form of a V as in Fig. 2. The liquid enters by a connection 10 arranged tangentially to impart a rotary movement to the liquid, and leaves by a connection 9. The pipes are of porcelain or glass and may have flanges 15 to conform to the shape of the tanks, Fig. 4, or may project into the tanks and be surrounded by insulating material 14, Fig. 3. Covers 11 facilitate cleaning and carry thermometers 12. The temperature is controlled by regulating the flow of the liquid bv hand or automatically. In the latter case an electrically operated admission cock is controlled by the thermometers 12 or by bimetallic strips. Cooling ribs or jackets may be fitted to all the tanks.
