Abstract
297,240. Brand, J. J. C., and Laing, B. Nov. 11, 1927. Pulverulent-fuel furnaces; casings and walls.- An auxiliary combustion chamber A for use with an existing boiler furnace or retort B<1> is of conical or pyramidal shape, the cross-sectional area increasing in proportion to the expansion of the combustion gases, and the burner c at the truncated apex of the cone or pyramid imparts a whirling movement to the pulverulent fuel and air. The combustion chamber is lined with firebrick having grooves E<1> in which are located water cooling tubes E communicating with headers E<2>. An air box F surrounds the combustion chamber the air entering at G and passing out at G<1> to an air heater from which the heated air is brought back to the air supply chamber c' of the burner c. Helical baffles or fins may be provided in the air box. The burner may be of the kind described in Specification 144,763 having a helical strip c<2> in the supply pipe c<2> to impart a whfirling movement to the fuel and primary air. Pre. heated air from the air chamber c' is supplied to the fuel as it passes from the pipe c<1> by tangential slots c<5> in a ring c<3>. A cone c<6> at the outlet end of the pipe c<1> spreads the fuel and air as a conical annulus. Air or water may be used alone for cooling the combustion chamber.
