Abstract

296,614. Sander, E. Jan. 2, 1928. Drilling-machines.-In drilling and like machines for operating on articles such as keys for locks, wall dowels &c., the work-holders and tool-spindles are arranged radially on a continuously rotating table, the rotation of the table being produced by the resistance, of the work on the tools. The machine comprises a frame 1 supporting by means of a ball bearing 4 a rotary table 2, Figs. 1 and 2, having slotted arms 3 on each of which is mounted a spindle headstook 5 and a radially slidable work-holder 6. Each headstock carries a tool-spindle 7 rotated continuously through a spring friction clutch incorporated in a bevel gear 8, all the gears 8 engaging a bevel wheel 10 driven by stepped pulleys 38. The table 2 is rotated about the bearing 4 by the gears 8 rolling round on the wheel 10 due to the resistance of the work on the tools, and if this should be too great the rotation of the table is restrained by a weighted lever 25 engaging radial projections 23 on a roller 24 attached to the table. The work-holders are fed towards the headstocks by weights 21 connected to p'ulleys 18 on pinion shafts 16 which engage racks on the holders, the feed being limited by arms 17 on the pinion shafts engaging an annular cam 22 which allows the holders to be fed inwards during three-quarters of a revolution of the table 2 and withdraws them during the remaining quarter. The blanks 30 are supplied to a shoot 31, Fig. 6, having at its lower end a spring' 32 to retain the lowermost blank in position until it is removed by a spring 33 on the holder entering a slot 34 in the shoot immediately above it. The blank is then pushed into a fork 35 from which it drops between the jaws 11 of the work-holder, the latter being opened and closed by right and left-handed worms 12 operated by a lever 14 which may be rocked to open the jaws by hand or automatically by a cam 37, Fig. 2. Closing of the jaws is effected by a spring or weight. Filing-machines, reciprocating. - To face the ends of the work-pieces a fixed file 29 is provided against which the blarks are pressed as the table 2 rotates. In a modification the work-table 2 is rotated by a separate driving device.
