Abstract

296,598. Rivers, F. Nov. 17, 1927. Paints; pigments.-A product containing iron oxide, particularly of use for the manufacture of paint, is obtained by burning a clay containing not less than 25 per cent of iron oxide and crushing the complete burnt products. A suitable clay is found in the region of South Marston, Wiltshire, and provides after burning, a product containing about 45 per cent of iron oxide, 44 per cent of silica, 2.7 per cent of magnesia, and a trace of arsenic. The burning is preferably affected by balling the clay into lumps, fuzing the lumps in a fire for about 12 hours, advantageously avoiding the use of coal, and crushing and screening the burnt products. A paint may be made by grinding together the burnt clay with linseed oil and turpentine.
