Abstract

296,318. Martin, W. Feb. 28, 1927. Cupping.-The mandrel c and plunger d of a machine for drawing down a metal tube in a series of dies, are guided by a number of guides which allow the passage of the driving rack f. Guide rollers b mounted in pivoted members a are automatically disengaged on the advance of the rack, a recess e being provided in the plunger to accommodate the rollers during the turning movement of the members a. The guide rollers may be located in more than one radial plane. In a modification, the rack may be shaped to pass clear of the guide rollers. any of the guide rollers may be mounted so as to be moved radially of the mandrel. In a further modification two or more of the under rollers l, Fig. 8, are supported by hydraulic cylinders k so that these rollers may be lowered to remove a mandrel. Certain of the under rollers may be carried by a frame which mav be moved to or from the mandrel by toggle-linkage operated by a single hydraulic cylinder. In a further modification, the guide rollers may be carried by frames m, Fig. 12, pivoted on an axis parallel to the mandrel, and moved thereabout by a hydraulic cylinder which simultaneously actuates a detent o. The members carrying the guide rollers may extend on either side of the mandrel, to guide the same laterally.
