Goffering. - Goffering-appliances with parallel motion jaws are characterized in that one of the jaws 13 is movable and is operated by a pivoted lever 17 connected to an operative part 21 forming part of cam mechanism which is actuated by the lever to move in a direction at right-angles to the path of the movable jaw. The pivoted lever 17 is connected at 20 by a pin and slot to a horizontally-slidable bar 21. A spring 22 tends to pull the bar towards a handle 11. The bar has depending lugs 26 carrying pins 27 which engage cam slots in a vertically sliding plate 24. When the lever 17. is operated, the plate 24 will be driven downwards carrying the movable jaw 13. The handle 11 may be fixed or adjustable about a pivot 28. In a modification, Fig. 4, the handle 11 is mounted in a ball and socket joint, and the lever 17 is not actuated directly by a finger piece on it but by a double-ended lever 31 with a portion 33 for gripping together with the handle 11. The other end of the lever 31 is connected by a pin and slot connection 34 with the lever 17. In the modification, means are provided by a spring-controlled detent 35 to hold the jaws closed against the action of the spring 22. For heating the movable jaw 13, an electric heater is provided comprising a body portion 40, a resistance element 41, and terminals 42. Two tubes of insulating material, such as quartz, are mounted in a central longitudinal rib or corrugation 44 on the underside of the cover plate 40, which has inturned edges so that the heater can be slid thereon. In this position, the, rib 44 will lie between the two channels 14 of the plate 13. Where more than two jaws are used, the jaws may be arranged in tiers.
