Cigarette - making machines.-For loosening and distributing cut tobacco. a box 10, Fig. 1, is provided at the bottom with longitudinal bars 11 forming a grid and is reciprocated vertically in order to loosen and spread the tobacco with a minimum of movement longitudinally of the grid. The box 10 is supported in vertical slides 15 and is reciprocated by crank discs 12 and connecting rods 13 engaging studs 14 on rods connected to the box through springs. Within the box are rotating pin rollers 17 to loosen the tobacco, which is fed to the box by a funnel 1 provided with oppositely rotating pin rollers 2 actuated by adjustable pawl and ratchet mechanism from the shaft 33. The loosening of the tobacco may be facilitated by giving one side of the box 10 a greater reciprocating movement than the other side. The tobacco falling through the grid 11 is conveyed by a belt 20, guide plates 25, and a pin roller 24 to the tobacco-rod conveyer belt 22, surplus tobacco being returned by a belt 27 for further conditioning, loosening, &c. The upper run of the belt 20 may be provided with a suction box 21 for removing dust and with means for supplying hot air, steam, or moisture for conditioning the tobacco. In a modification, the pin rollers 17 are replaced by short endless belts provided with pins; pin rollers are provided beneath the grid 11; and the belt 20 conveys the tobacco to a funnel swinging over a hopper subdivided by a number of inclined partitions and having at the outlet a pin roller for discharging the tobacco on the tobacco-rod conveyer belt. In another form, Fig. 8, the belt 20 conveys the tobacco to a funnel 45 swinging over a funnel 43 divided by oscillating partitions 51 leading to guides each formed by a pair of endless belts 53, 55 travelling over walls 55, 56. At the lower end, each guide is provided with a guide plate 66 and a pin roller 65 on which the tobacco is held by a spring comb 67. The tobacco is disengaged from the rollers 65 by oscillating combs 68 actuated by arms 69 on sliding blocks 70, and is screened by grids 75 on to a belt 76 conveying it to the rod-forming belt 78. In a further form, Fig. 10, tobacco from the reciprocating grid 1 is conveyed by the belt 20 to an oscillating sieve 83 having sections 84, 85 of different mesh, so that the shorter and longer fibres are sifted into guides 86, 87 respectively. A cover 88 for the section 84 of smaller mesh is adjustable to regulate the proportion of shorter shreds. The guides are provided with pin rollers 86<1>, 87<1> from which the tobacco is disengaged by an oscillating fork 91, 92 and conveyed by a belt 89 to the rodforming belt 90.
