Abstract

295,464. Woodhead, G. A., and Sanders, T. H. June 7,1927. Collision-guards of the kind having an arrangement of laminated springs are cushioned or controlled by a pair of laminated springs secured at an intermediate point of their lengths direct to the vehicle frame, the outer end of each being pivotally connected to the adjacent end of the bumper bar whilst their other ends are free and engage behind centralizing pins on the bumper bar. As shown the bumper bar a of channel section is carried by two horizontal elliptic laminated springs b connected at one end to a bolt b<3> operating in a slot a' in the bar a. The other end of each spring is not connected to the bar but bears against a pin a<2>which aids the bar to resume its proper position after displacement due to oblique or other impact. Compression of the springs is provided 6y a bolt e having a head e<1> and a conical nut h which fits a corresponding aperture i in the plate g perrnitting the bolt e to assume an oblique position on impact as shown in Fig. 4 and assist the self-centring of the bar after impact. In a modification the bolt e is replaced by cables adjustably connecting the ends of the bar with the chassis.
