Abstract

295,349. McCornack, H. Aug. 10, 1927, [Convention date]. Cow-milkers. - In a milking-machine having a milk-receiving bucket 1 pivotally suspended from a support 2, 3 in such a manner that the weight thereof is partly borne by the cow's udder through the teat cups 6, an oscillator 17 is interposed between the bucket and a point substantially fixed in relation to the suspension means for the purpose of mechanically swinging the bucket independently of the surging produced by the teat cups under the action of the pulsator 11. The oscillator consists of a rigid shell 18, connected by a stem 19 to a handle 20 of the bucket lid 8, and a rubber diaphragm 21, fitted with a forwardly extending stem 24 engaging with a hook 26 on a pivoted arm 4 on the bucket handle 5, and' the space between the parts 18, 21 is connected by a pipe 27 to the pulsator 11 which is mounted on the lid 8. A valve 15 with hanging weight 16 provides a communica. tion between the inside of the bucket and vacuum in a tube 12 connected up to the pulsator. As each teat is milked out the respective cup is automatically pulled off and drops to a position to shut off the vacuum from it. By the provision in each nipple 14 of a circumferential groove 28 with one or more openings 29 the vacuum in the bucket can be utilized to hold the milk tubes 5a more securely to the nipples and so to the bucket lid; a similar connection is provided between the pipe 12 and the pulsator nipple 12a. To prevent milk from being carried over into the vacuum line the nipples 14 are arranged at an acute angle to the lid and the inner ends of the nipples are made bell shape, and there is also a semicircular deflecting ring 30 of triangular cross-section arranged on the lower surface of the lid around the vacuum port 13. The spout 7 is preferably provided with a central reinforcing strip 31 which may be crimped to form projections 32 serving to prevent slipping between the spout and a receptacle into which milk from the bucket is being poured. When the bucket has been disconnected from the cow the hooked arm 4 falls flat against the handle 5 and lies in the channeled upper face thereof. Australian Specification 20624 is referred to.
