Abstract

295,047. Mancinelli, G. P. Aug. 4, 1927, [Convention date]. Reversing-gearing. -Unidirectional motion of a shaft is transmitted through gearing and clutches to a shalt intended to be rotated in either direction at varying intervals and lengths of time, as when the shaft is actuating a ship's rudder or the fins of submarines, aircraft and torpedoes, controlling means being provided for determining the variants. A constant-direction shaft, drives through worm gearing s a bevel wheel b<1> which engages bevels c', d<1> free on the shaft v but adapted to drive it through magnetic clutches f<1>, g'. The shaft v actuates a rudder 4 through the screw and nut gear 2. 3. and actuates a follow-up switch x through screw and nut gear z. w. The clutches f<1>, g' are wired to a source of power y and incorporated is a control switch n' with two contacts h<1>, m<1>. According to the degree of displacement of the switch, so one or other clutch remains in and the rudder is proportionately turned round. A corresponding gear b<2> is employed to actuate the horizontal fins 5 under control of the switch n<2>. When used on torpedoes a switch 6 is fitted when horizontal rudders are required to remain set without being influenced by the control. The controls may be moved by hand or automatically as from a gyroscope or hydrostatic depth plate. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also a statement that the coupling and actuation thereof may be hydraulic, pneumatic or mechanical in place of electrical units. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
