Abstract

Outting and slicing vegetables.-A cone-shaped casing 8 having a plate 9 closing its narrow end is supported on a pedestal 1 by a hollow shaft 10 extending from the plate 9 into a bearing 4 formed at the upper end of the pedestal. A screw clamp 3 secures the pedestal to a table. The upper roll of the casing is provided with an opening having lips 12 that serve as guides for receiving a hopper 13. A hollow shaft 15 fitting in the shaft 10 is screw-threaded and internally flanged at one end, and at the other carries a plate 14 to which two 'diametrically-opposite curved walls 18, 19, are secured, one edge of each wall carrying a knife 20, 21, whilst to the other edge of each wall a conically curved spring steel plate 22, 23, is fixed. The distance of the plates 22, 23, from the knife-edges 20, 21, and so the thickness of the slices cut, is adjusted by pressing strips 25 carried by a central shaft 24 adapted to be drawn into the shaft 15 by a wing nut on a screw thread 24<a> at the end of the shaft 24. A spring 26 hearing against the internal flange of the shaft 15 tends to move the strips 25 away from the plates 22, 23. For slicing oranges or potatoes an ordinary hopper 13 is used, arranged at the top of the casing, but for slicing runner beans and similar long articles the hopper 13 is withdrawn and a plate 31 substituted, this plate carrying guides 32 to direct the beans to the knives. The casing 8, when the plate 31 is used, is rotated through approximately a right angle in its supporting bearing 4, the plate 9 carrying a screw clamp 29 riding in a slot 7 in a plate 5 at the end of the bearing 4 to facilitate such adjustment.
