Door chains and the like. - In a device for holding a hinged or sliding door or window in an adjusted position by means of a weighted lever c engaging a toothed or serrated bar f, the weighted lever is provided with a nose e<2> that is wider than the abutments d<4> of the limbs d<3> between which the lever is pivoted, in order to prevent the lever being moved into a position in which it will not tend to engage with the bar. As shown in Fig. 1, the stay-bar f is guided in a member d pivotally mounted on the window frame b, and the cranked lever e has an arm that is normally forced into engagement with a notch in the bar by the weighted end e<1> of the lever. The stay-bar is released by lifting the end e<1>. In a modification, the lever e is mounted on the end of a plain bar pivotally connected at one end to the frame b, the lever e being slidable along a notched bar secured to the inside of the casement.
