Abstract

293,572. Johnson, J. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). July 13, 1927. Olefines. - Gaseous hydrocarbons consisting mainly of olefines are obtained by passing mixtures containing an oxide of carbon and hydrogen, preferably under pressure, at elevated temperatures over a catalyst comprising iron or cobalt, the velocity of the gas being substantially less than that required for the production of liquid hydrocarbons. A suitable velocity is 2 litres per hour for 50 cubic centimetres of catalyst. Preferably the catalyst also contains a noble metal or a difficultly reducible oxide, particularly an oxide of a metal of the 6th group. Other catalytic or inert materials may also be present. According to an example a gas mixture comprising 51 per cent of carbon monoxide, 44 per cent of hydrogen, and 5 per cent of nitrogen is passed at 370‹ C. and 50 atmospheres at the rate of 2-4 litres per hour through a high pressure furnace 15 mm. in diameter constructed of nickel-chromium allov and containing 30 cubic centimetres of a catalyst composed of iron and silver.
