Abstract

293,343. Dunlop Rubber Co., Ltd., and Lane, F. H. April 6, 1927. Drawings to Specification. Latex, treating.-A means for determining the current density necessary for the electrophoretic deposition of rubber or the like havmg given characteristics consists in the use of a test anode mounted so as to bear a varying current density along its length and therefore a deposit of varying character; the anode may be provided with a scale indicating the current density at each point. The anode may consist of a vertical zinc plate forming one side of an ebonite box, and the cathode of a vertical bar mounted near one end of the plate. The scale may be calibrated on the assumption that the thickness of the deposit at each point is proportional to the current density. Calibration may be facilitated by connecting the test cell in series with an ammeter and another cell having cylindrical electrodes mounted so as to exhibit uniform current density and comparing the thickness of deposit in the two cells. The invention may be applied to deposition from natural or artificial vulcanized or unvulcanized dispersions of rubber containing any of the usual compounding ingredients.
