Abstract

Exhaust-silencers.-The silencer comprises an outer casing a with end plates a<1>, a<2> held together by a screwed spindle d upon which are mounted baffle plates c<1>, c<2>, c' adapted to form narrow annular passages in conjunction with stepped portions b<1>, b<2>, b<3> of an inner casing b. The exhaust enters at a<7> and leaves at a<6>, where a nozzle e<1> may be located. The rear portion e of this nozzle is enlarged and adapted to face in the direction of motion of the vehicle so as to produce a flow of air which facilitates the withdrawal of the exhaust. The baffle plates may be perforated at c<4>, c', c<6> and are adjustable on the spindle d to vary the width of the annular passages. The space between the casings a, b may be packed with asbestos, slag wool or other sounddeadening material. Where lateral space is limited as on a motor cycle, the casings and plates are of the approximately elliptical form shown, but in the case of a motor car they may be of circular form. The outlet socket a<6> may be provided with a. cover having an elongated slot a<8>, Fig. 3.
