Abstract

292,301. Livesey, T. F. April 13, 1927. Adjusting andunshipping levers. -Hand levers for controlling dipping head lights, brakes, speed gearing &c. on motor vehicles are formed in two parts, one sliding telescopically within the other so that it can be pushed down to avoid obstruction. The handle portion comprises a rod C preferably of stainless steel, slidable within a tubular member B pivoted at its upper end. A spring pressed ball b<2> engaging a groove c retains the rod when extended, an enlargement on the end of the rod co-operating with a part of the tube B of reduced diameter to prevent complete withdrawal. In one form, Fig. 3, the tube B is pivoted by means of a stud a within a bracket A secured to the vehicle floor and is coupled by a rod (not shown) to headlights to be controlled, a spring A<1> being arranged on a pivoted rod A<2> between the bracket A and a lug b on the tube. Alternatively, the end of the tube is affixed in a disc B', Fig. 5, pivotally mounted in a bracket A, a washer B<3> being interposed and a spring B<2> provided on the stud a being regulable by a nut a<2>. A grub screw b<4> enables pressure of the spring b<5> on the ball b<2> to be regulated. In a brake lever, Fig. 8, the tube B is pivoted to the end of a shaft F which is rocked to actuate the brake rods, a spring e drawing the tube laterally so that a tooth or lug b<8> thereon engages a fixed quadrant rack E. In a gear control, Fig. 10, the rod C engages a gate D' whilst the tubular part B is formed with a boss b<6> engaging the end of a cross shaft D operating the gear selector finger.
