Cylinders, pipes for; pumps, ejector; exhaust silencers.-In a two-stroke-cycle engine in which the exhaust gas is expelled at the outer end of the stroke by the incoming charge, the exhaust pipe has one or more branches open to atmosphere, and having a total volume about equal to the volume swept by the piston; an ejector action is thus produced on the exhaust gas, no escape taking place from the branches. As shown in Fig. 2, an exhaust tank 11 has a tangential connection 18 with the cylinder exhaust port, and the exhaust pipe 12 has a branch 13. The branch may alternatively be connected to the tank as shown at 26 or to the connection 18. As shown in Fig. 3, the branch 19 through a partition 20 in the tank and the lower portion 21 of the tank acts as a silencer; a valve 23 is closed at starting to prevent the escape of exhaust gas.
