Holding and picking-up tools.-A device for gripping articles in places difficult of access comprises a wire, cord, &c. bent into a loop a, the .ends of the wire &c. being passed through a flexible guide or holder b formed of tightly coiled wire with a rigid portion e secured thereto and fixed to a manually operated handle c as by knotting at d. The loop is wire wound at f to prevent it being pulled through the guide and to give a better grip on the article. In a modification, Fig. 2, one end of the loop a is fixed between the tube g and a short curved tube h and the other end of the loop is fixed to a rod i with handle j. Instead of employing a tubular guide the wires may be passed through eyes projecting from a rod, and two devices with loops of different sizes may be thus mounted on one rod with the ends of the loop connected to a single operating handle or to separate handles. In another modification, Fig. 4, the loop a coacts with the curved edges p of a head fixed to the end of the tube g, the head being formed of two stampings w separated by a distance piece n and riveted together at o. The device shown in Fig. 5 has additional gripping jaws s pivoted at r to a head q and operatively connected with the loop a by means of pins t, which latter are disengaged from the loop enabling the jaws to be swung down out of the way into the dotted line position when the loop is to be used alone, a rubber or other spring u maintaining the jaws in either position. In a further modification, Fig. 6, the guide tube g has a longitudinal slot w with ratchet teeth x along one edge adapted to be engaged by a pin v on the rod i to which the ends of the loop are secured so that an object gripped by the loop a can be held by one hand. Instead of the wire winding f the wire of the loop itself may be closely coiled at the loop part.
