Multiple machines; optical apparatus; electric <t);d magnetic machines; optical or magnetic soundreproducing apparatus associated with automatic musical instruments.-An apparatus for reproducing sound from a photographic film record, or from a magnetic band or wire record, is combined with a gramophone or phonograph of ordinary type, or with a mechanical musical instrument, such as an automatic piano, so that the two machines or apparatus comprised in the combination can be operated simultaneously or individually. The Figure shows a gramophone (which is of the kind having two sound-boxes o and tone arms n) combined with photo-electric sound-reproducing apparatus. The photographic sound-record film d has central perforations which engage with teeth on the periphery of the turntable c, and passes from a reel f to a reel g driven through a slip clutch r by a motor h, which also drives the turntable. The film passes through an apparatus h comprising a source of light and one or more photo-electric cells i, whereby current fluctuations corresponding to the recorded sound are set up, and, by means of an amplifier k, operate loudspeakers l, L<1>. By using a switch p, telephonic receivers (which, when required, are substituted for the ordinary phonographic sound-boxes o) may be connected in circuit instead of the loudspeakers, so that in this case the sound reproduced from the film record is emitted from the horns m. The switch p may be so constructed as to cause the loud-speakers !, l<1> and the telephonic sound-boxes to work simultaneously. According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) electric pick-up devices, connected to the amplifier, can be used on the gramophone. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
