Abstract

289,420. Wilman, Z. April 27, 1927, [Convention date]. Machine guns. - Relates to sound, flame, and recoil subduing devices comprising a chamber at the muzzle of the gun into which the gases expand before leaking out, and consists mainly in the provision of a double closure for preventing the escape of gas through the exit hole for the bullet and the return of gas to the barrel. In the form shown in Fig. 1, when a shot is fired, the bullet from the barrel 1 passes through a small chamber 3, an orifice 19, a main chamber 5, and an outlet 20. The gases expand into these chambers, and the pressure in the small chamber 3 operates a piston 18, which bears on an arm 11 and rocks a lever 8 pivoted at 7, thereby closing the orifices 19, 20 by means of balls 9 on pivots 10 on the ends of the lever 8. The arm 11 has a hole 12 for the passage of the bullet. The closing movement is allowed by the recoil of the barrel 1 relatively to the chambers, which are attached by a socket 2 to the radiator of the gun. When the barrel subsequently runs out, it bears on a transverse bar 15 connected by rods 13 to the lever 8, and returns the lever to the open position shown. In one modification, the lever is returned to the open position by a spring plunger at the front end of the chamber 5. In another modification, Fig. 5, the chamber containing the lever 38 has a rear extension 29 enclosing a barrel extension 31 having radial holes 30 covered by a correspondingly perforated sleeve 33 interposed between a rear spring 35 and the lever 38. The gas pressure moves the sleeve 33 to the rear, closing the various orifices; and the spring 35 returns all the parts to the open position when the gas pressure has subsided. In a further modification, Fig. 6, the gases are deflected by a " funnel " member 42 through orifices 44 and are trapped in the chamber 43 by rear and front valves 39, 40 interconnected by links 46. The valves, are closed by the gas pressure, and are re-opened by the gun barrel 45 when it subsequently runs out. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) describes also another modification, shown in the closed position in Fig. 8 (Cancelled). In this modification, the member which closes the outlet 50 is in the form of a ball 47, which turns about a pivot 49 while it slides backwards and forwards. A passage 48 through the ball is in line with the barrel in the open position. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
