Machines using continuous wire. - In the manufacture of match packets having cover portions held together by a bent staple, the match bands are passed to wire stapling apparatus which includes a carriage 284 moving between guide bars on a table 281 and having plates 285, 286 for bending the wire drawn off a spool and fed through a tube 358 to a stop 360. A sliding rod 296 carrying a die 297 is accommodated in the carriage 284. Levers 310, 315 are pivoted to a stand 304 on the table 281, and are caused to swing by means of rollers 308, 309 carried on a stand 307 moving with the carriage 284 against the action of a helical spring 313 and a flat spring 317 respectively. The free end of the lever 315 engages a lug 319 of a sliding tongue 320. At the forward motion of the carriage 284 its knife 361 severs the wire 322 and the plates 285, 286 and die 297 move forward, bending the wire round the tongue 320 which then rises allowing the formed staple to be driven into the packet band. A pressure foot 311 and the lever 310 press on the staple and band at this stage to prevent bending. The bending plates followed by the die are then returned to their initial position, and on the lever 310 rising the band is free to advance beneath a plate 356 and a die 352 for producing a slight fold in the band and wire firmly to fix the staple limbs. The other end of the staple is bent upwards by a lever 363. The band is now fed forward by combs to cutting and folding mechanism comprising two wings of a table on to which a section of the band is delivered, severed from the band by a descending knife and caused to fold about its middle by the closure of the wings, whilst a hooked bending lever is brought over their upper ends to bend the projecting portion of the staple downwards so as to hold the portions of the cover together.
