Abstract

288,590. Goss Printing Press Co., (Assignees of Bell, H. D.). April 13, 1927, [Convention date]. Delivery apparatus; associating - apparatus; cutting-apparatus.-In sheet cutting, associating, and folding mechanism, particularly for fast rotary printing-presses, adapted to operate on two webs or sets of associated webs 1, 100, and comprising a folding cylinder 25 and a transfer cylinder 121 over which the webs pass in their respective paths, cutting cylinders 69, 169 cooperating respectively with the cylinders 25, 121 and means for associating and folding the sheets thus cut, the cylinders 25, 121 are adjacent to each other and have interengaging mechanism for transferring the sheets directly from the cylinder 121 to the cylinder 25. The webs 1, 100, which may be a printed web slit centrally, pass over adjustable, rollers 6, 106 respectively to the cylinders 25, 69 and 121, 169 where they are cut into sheets by a knife 72 on the cylinder 69 co-operating with blocks 57, 58 on the cylinder 25, and a knife 172 on the cylinder 169 co-operating with blocks 135, 136 on the cylinder 121. The cylinders, 69, 169 are situated angularly relatively to their respective, cylinders 25, 121 in such manner that the cutting does not take place simultaneously so as to minimize shock. Two sets of collecting-pine 49, 31 and 149, 137 are provided on the cylinders 25, 121, each set being operated by means of an arm 52 carrying a roller 53 riding in a cam groove 36 mounted loosely on the shaft 26 of the respective cylinder and adjusted by means of an arm having a slot engaging a bolt on the framing. Each of the cylinders 69, 169 carries one set of collecting-pins 75, 173 operated similarly to the pins 49 but capable of being rendered inoperative by sliding the operating arm 78 axially so that its roller does not engage the cam groove 80. When delivering a product of maximum size, the leading edge of the web 1 is taken by the pins 75 and a sheet cut therefrom when the cylinder 69 completes one revolution. Thereupon one of the sets of pins 49 take both the edge of the sheet and the web and carry them around the cylinder 25 until the web is again cut, after which the operation is repeated. The cylinders 121, 169 act on the web 100 in the same way. When the pins, 31, 137, Fig. 2, holding the leading edges are opposite one another, the pins 31 take the sheets off the pins 137 and carry the four sheets around to the folding-rollers 199, 200 where the folding-blade 29 on the cylinder 25 tucks the complete set of sheets between the rollers for the final fold. The holes made by the pins 75 register with those made by the pins 137 and those made by the pins 31 register with those made by the pins 173 so that the transfer of sheets from the cylinder 121 to the cylinder 25 takes place, easily. By putting one or other or both sets of pins 75, 173 out of action the product can be varied. The bearings 124 of the cylinder 121 can be adjusted by a screw 126 to allow for the thickness of the products. Also the tail end of the product may be controlled by a roller 225, Fig. 11, carried by a screw-adjusted bracket 227. Folding-paper. - In order to allow for the thickness of the folded product, the rollers 199, 200 have grooves 201, 202 to receive the leading edge, and the roller 199 is carried by links 208 pivoted about the axis of the roller 200 so as to be adjusted relatively to the roller 25.
