Clutches, friction.-In cone and other friction clutches for motor-vehicles &c., prior engagement is made by a plate clutch, in order to avoid fierceness. A friction-faced plate c is adjustably supported by studs c<1> on the friction-faced male cone b and is pressed by springs c<3>. The plate c engages the wall a<2> of the driving member a<1> before contact of the cones b, a<3>. The plate c may be mounted on the member a<1>, and the springs c' may be supplemented or replaced by dashpots.
