Abstract

288,478. Knight, W. A. Aug. 31, 1927. Slips.-Means for transmitting vessels to and from slipway berths comprise a main slipway provided with rails, a main carriage comprising a unitary structure arranged to travel on the rails and provided with short transverse rails and with keel blocks located between the transverse rails and centrally of the carriage, side slipping carriages adapted to travel on the transverse rails and form a cradle to receive the vessel, and one or more side slips provided with rails with which the transverse rails on the main carriage register. The provision of keel blocks on the main carriage enables a vessel to be hauled up on the main carriage when the side carriages are already in use under another vessel on the side slip-ways. Fig. 1 shows the arrangement of the main slipway a, with rails b; the main carriage c provided with short transverse rails d; the side slipping carriages e ; the side slipway rails g; and the hauling gear h. The main carriage c is a unitary structure which can be drawn up the main slipway. The side slip rails g, Fig. 8, are at a higher level than the main slip rails b, so that the transverse rails d on the carriage c register therewith when the carriage is drawn up. The side slipping carriages e comprise a number of separate units mounted on the transverse rails d, and are provided with jacks or other means for transferring a vessel to and from the concrete way or keel blocks at the side berths. Bilge blocks i are provided. Fig. 8 shows a vessel, blocked upon the side slipping carriages being transferred from the main carriage to a side slipway. On the left of Fig. 9 is shown a vessel blocked up in a side berth after being transferred thereto by the side slipping carriages. The side slipping carriage may remain under the berthed vessel; in which case another vessel may be hauled up on the main carriage c only, as shown on the right of Fig. 9, after being blocked up on keel blocks j of the main carriage.
