Abstract

288,363. Fehr, P. E., and Lock, A. C. Jan. 5, 1927. Supplying consuming devices from variablespeed generators; charging batteries.-A generator control comprises a pair of bimetallic bars 20, 21 around which are wrapped heating resistances 22, 23 which are shunted across the generator 10 and load 14 respectively. The free ends of the bars carry contacts 30, 32 which coact with contacts 29, 21 on a spring arm 28 carried by a U-shaped conducting element 25 in the shorter limb of which a rearward extension of the contact 32 is carried by an insulating bush. Half the resistance 22 can be shorted through the path 40<a>, 25, 29, 30, 20, 47 and a resistance 15 in series with the field winding of the generator can be shorted through the path 40a, 25, 31, 32, 23, 41. With no load and the accumulator being charged, contacts 31, 32 are in engagement, shorting the resistance 15, and contacts 29, 30 are broken until the accumulator is fully charged, by which time the resistance 22 will have heated the bar 20 sufficiently to cause the contacts 29, 30 to engage. This causes half the resistance 22 to be shorted, causing further flexing of the bar 20 and breaking contacts 31, 32 thereby putting the resistance 15 again in circuit to reduce the generator output. When the switch 44 is closed to put on the load, the heating resistance 23 is energized, thereby flexing the bar 21 and again making contacts 31, 32 to short-circuit the resistance 15 and to permit full output of the generator.
