Abstract

Propelling.-A device for moving railway and like vehicles is provided with a lever for engaging .under the vehicle wheel and pushing it forwards and with an internal-combustion, electric, or other motor for operating the lever. The forward end of the lever is brought into contact with the wheel, as said forward end is depressed by propelling the device forwards, preferably by the motor, or by means of a guiding-handle 25, or a connection to the vehicle, such as a wire rope, chain, or rod and a spring, which is strained during the raising of the forward end of the lever. In one arrangement, a slide 5 formed with a tongue-like front end and adapted to be moved upon rails 4 is provided with a doublearmed lever 11 having a presser-piece 13 for engaging under the vehicle wheel 10 and operated by an eccentric 15 or the like engaging a roller 14 on its free end. The eccentric is driven by chain or other gearing 9, 18 from an internalcombustion motor 7 on the slide, and a wheel 23 for feeding the slide forwards is connected by chain or other gearing 20 to the shaft 16 of the eccentric. The feed-wheel 23 is provided on its periphery with flat surfaces corresponding in number to the ratio between the speeds of the eccentric and feed-wheel shafts. The positions of the eccentric and the feed-wheel are so adjusted that the slide is moved forwards during the downward movements of the presser-piece 13. The flat surfaces on the feed-wheel may be dispensed with, in which case the wheel is raised with every upward movement of the presserpiece and lowered, with every downward movement, on to the rail, e.g. by means of a knee lever. The device is provided with curved projecting guides 26 for enclosing the rim of the vehicle wheel and with hinged guiding-strips 28 for engaging on both sides of the rail and capable of being individually raised by cords, or chains 29, 30, or rods so as to enable the device to pass over points, the chains &c. being guided on the handle 25, which may also carry devices for regulating and starting the motor, and for actuating couplings and chain speed-gears when these are used. The device may be provided with running-wheels 32 carried by a lever 31 so that the device may travel on the ground when required, the wheels 32 being in some cases driven by the motor.
