Winding-machines; spindle-driving apparatus: -In bobbin to bobbin sizing-machines for artificial silk and like yarns of the kind wherein the yarn passes over or through a heated drying- device, the winding bobbins or cheeses d are driven at one or both ends by friction discs f each engaging two adjacent bobbins, and each bobbin is provided with two friction wheels of which one, g', is integral with the spindle G and the other g' is carried by a bush g<3> screwed on the spindle and serving to clamp the bobbin thereon. The yarns pass from the creel A through a comb B<2>, over a roller B' rotating in the sizing-trough B, through a comb C<1> which is reciprocated from the shaft of the roller B<1>, to impart a rolling action to the yarn, over a heated drying-plate, or cell C and through a stationary or reciprocating comb C<2> to the winding-on bobbins. The sizing-trough is mounted on pillars E<1> and is adjustable thereon by a ratchet wheel and chain e. The spindles G are carried in bearings h preferably formed of compressed fibrous material and each provided with slots h<1>, h<2>, Fig. S, adapted respectively to receive the spindle in its operative and inoperative positions. The friction discs f are mounted on shafts F driven through worm gearing from a shaft M driven through a change-speed gear box L. The yarn guides K are mounted on rods secured to bars K<2> carried by levers K<3>, which are oscillated to lay the yarn by means of cam and lever mechanism N operated by worm gearing from the foremost shaft F.
