Abstract
286,167. Johnson, J. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). Sept. 5, 1927. Addition to 269,770. Electromagnets.- In making metallic powders for compression into cores for electromagnets, Pupin coils &c. by decomposing the corresponding metal carbonyl, in place of treating the resulting powders in an inert atmosphere, as in the parent. Specification, the powder according to the present invention is heat-treated in a reducing atmosphere. The product is then ground, preferably in a ball mill, to grains of the requisite size, generally in the absence of oxygen, and the resulting powder is used for making the cores. When a slight superficial oxidation of the grains is required, this may be obtained by exposing the ground powder for a short time to an oxidizing atmosphere. In an exemplary process, the powder obtained by decomposing iron carbonyl is treated for eighteen hours in a revolving furnace at 500 C. with a current of hydrogen. After cooling in an atmosphere of hydrogen, the product, is ground in a ball mill without access of oxygen and the resulting powder has a permeability more than double that of powder which has not undergone the heat treatment.
