Borehole apparatus ; ground augers.-Earth boring apparatus carried by a self-propelled vehicle comprises a drill stem 13 rotated through bevel gearing 30 from a transverse shaft 27 and supported in a lattice column 5 pivotally mounted in bearings 7 so that the drill stem may tilt about the axis of the shaft 27; the tilting is effected by a crank 55 and a pinion 57 engaging a toothed segment 58. Springs 9 balance the column which is held in adjusted position by struts 6. The shaft 27 is driven through chain gearing 33, a clutch controlled by a lever 52, shaft 35, bevel gearing 38 and shaft 4 from the engine which drives the vehicle. A pump 17 is driven by chain gearing 26 from the shaft 27 and draws oil from a tank 16 for delivery through a valve 18 and pipe 22 or 23 to one end of a cylinder 12 to raise or lower the drill stem, or the oil may be returned from the pump through the valve 18 and pipe 21 direct to the tank 16; a valve 15 relieves excess pressure. To assist in boring equi-distant holes, a device for indicating distance traversed is provided near the driver of the vehicle. In a modified arrangement, the crank 55 and gear for tilting the auger may be arranged at the front of the vehicle and operate through suitable transmission means.
