Ashes, removing; grates.-In gas generators of the kind in which a diametral beam 8 rotates over a grate 30 at the bottom of the ash bed to discharge the ash outwardly towards the periphery of the generator and also cause the charge above it to rise and fall, means is provided for enabling the rate of ash removal to be varied independently of the speed of the beam. The ash forced outwardly by the beam passes through an opening 10 into an annular ash receptacle 22 mounted upon a drive ring 11 which is rotated on ball bearings 12 by gearing 15 connected to variable-speed driving mechanism. A pivoted ash plough 23 projects into the receptacle 22 and is adjustable by a handle 25 having a pin 26 which mav fit into any one of a series of holes in a sector plate 28. A number of adjustable ash ploughs 23 may be disposed around the generator and the ash drops into an ashpit 3 from which it is removed through doors 29. Clinkers are broken up between the ends of the beam 8 and the side wall of the generator, which is provided with a ridged plate 9. The amount of ash passing through the opening 10 depends upon the rate of removal from the receptacle, i.e. upon the setting of the ash plough 23 so that the speed of the beam may be increased when necessary to agitate the charge without ejecting the ash too rapidly. The side wall 1 of the producer extends down slightly below the level of the grate to obstruct direct outward travel of the ash. The beam 8 is connected to the drive ring 11 at its ends and is made hollow to receive cooling water from a pipe 19 located within a pedestal 6 at the axis of rotation and the water may pass through pipes 20 at the ends of the beam to the hollow drive ring 11. The grate 30 comprises sector-shaped sections supported centrally by the pedestal 6 and at the outer ends by a cylindrical wall 4, the draught openings in the grate being inclined in the direction of rotation of the beam so that the ash is swept away from the openings. The beam is of triangular section, the leading edge being provided with teeth 33 and the drive ring 11 may support an annular ash-crushing device converging downwardly towards the opening 10, having oblique corrugations or ridges opposite the wearplate 9. The driving gearing is enclosed within partitions 17, 18 and air or steam is fed beneath the grate by a pipe 7.
