Cooling fish.-In a plant for freezing fish on board ship by circulation of cooled brine, as described in Specification 269,574, the freezing tanks discharge directly into the brine tanks, the filters being omitted. Tanks 6 symmetrically arranged on either side of the vessel are divided by a sloping partition 7 into an upper compartment 12 in which the fish are treated and a lower compartment 13 in which the brine is cooled by evaporator coils 14. The compartments communicate by a brine valve 11 and a packed door 18 is provided for discharge of fish from the upper compartment. A loading shoot 15 to each tank has a covered opening accessible above the deck, and a brine pump 10 and circulation pipes 9 are employed. The excess of brine overflows through a passage 8 to the tank 13. When the freezing is completed the brine is emptied through the valves 11 and subsequently the fish are discharged through the doors 18. In a modification, the freezing tanks are separate from the brine-cooling tanks and are arranged in pairs back to back, with horizontal or sloping discharge doors at or near the bottom operated from the deck by gearing. The fish are discharged on to a shoot leading to a basket in which they may be washed for the coating with ice, and from this basket they may be discharged through another shoot to the storage space. The freezing-tanks are provided near the top with grids 17, and may have openwork vertical partitions 33, Fig. 5, for keeping the fish from massing together. Specification 144,368 also is referred to.
