Abstract
281,064. Egg, H. Oct. 25, 1926. Golf-practising appliances. - Apparatus for giving instruction in games comprises a base, an indicator in the form of a strip or post upstanding from the base and in a position where it is struck by the club when a correct stroke is executed, and additional indicators also in the form of strips or posts upstanding from the base, arranged on each side of the first-mentioned indicator in positions where one of them is struck by the club when a faulty stroke is executed. In the form shown in Fig. 1, a base 1 secured to a ground anchor 3 by a bolt and nut 2 is provided with a number of slots 6 within which wooden indicator strips 5 are loosely held in a vertical position. The ball is teed a short distance away so that the club in making the stroke dislodges one of the strips and thus indicates the nature of the stroke. Strings 8 may be employed to prevent the strips being driven away. Holes 7 in the base, for alternate use, are provided for the bolt 2 to permit adjustment of the distance between the ball and the vertical strips. In a modification, Fig. 2, the indicator strips 10 are pivoted to obliquelyarranged members 12 pivoted on the base. The stroke of the club is delivered from the right hand side of the device as shown in the Figure, and causes one of the strips to spin on its pivot; if the stroke is too low the member 12 is knocked back as shown by dotted lines. In a further modification, Fig. 4, the indicator strips are replaced by metal indicator posts 17 sheathed in rubber and hinged to a block 30 adjustable along a metal support 31. A rubber-sheathed metal post 18 is hinged at the other end of the support. In using the device, the player strikes at the post 18 so that the club head after knocking down the post passes on and turns down one of the' indicator posts 17 according to the direction of the stroke. The indicators, instead of being hinged, may be flexible and may be adapted to emit different sounds when struck. A modified object to be struck consists of a disc of paper or cardboard the edge of which is held in a slot in the head of a ground pin. Instead of an object to be struck, a paper picture of a ball may be pinned to the ground. Tees.-In Fig. 5 is shown a tee for use with the devices shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The tee consist of a wooden block 20 with a slot 21 over which the ball 42 is placed. An anchoring device 22 may be provided for the ball. The leading edge 23 of the tee is sufficiently deep to allow the ball to fall clear of the club after being struck.
