Centreless grinding; gauges. - A centreless grinding machine having peripherally opposed grinding and governing wheels, has means, which are employed when grinding tapered or shouldered work, for automatically feeding the grinding-wheel up to the operative position and for withdrawing it, and also has means for adjustment of the movement of the wheel and means for ejecting finished work. The grinding- wheel 4 is carried by a slide 3 moved by a screw 1 upon which is loosely mounted a sleave 6 having thereon clutch teeth 26 and having also an arm 8 engaged by a link 15. The link is reciprocated, to oscillate the sleeve, by a lever 10 actuated by a crank or a cam driven through a clutch 12 from the main drive of the machine, and the link is made in two parts 15, 16 having between them an adjustable spring 20, whereby, when the rotation of the sleeve 6 is stopped by an arm 22 thereon and a stop 21 to arrest the inward feed of the grinding-wheel, the link mechanism may overrun slightly. The screw 1 has slidably keyed thereon a capstan wheel 5 movable by a nut 29 to engage clutch teeth 24 with the teeth 26 on the sleeve, whereby the automatic feeding of the wheel operates. The work is ejected on the reverse movement of the sleeve 6 by a rod 39 actuated, through a link 35 and an arm 34 carried by a rod 31, by an abutment 30 on the sleeve 6, which engages a spring pawl 33 carried on the rod 31; a spring 40 retracts the rod 39. The rod 39 is adjustably carried by a bar 38 and a fine adjustment is effected by a nut 41 which engages a screwed part of a block 42 carrying a roller 37 engaging the link 35. A projection 46 of the block serves, by abutment against adjustable nuts 45 on a rod 44, to limit the rearward movement of the ejector.
