Abstract
280,764. Parsons, J. May 25, 1926. Cigarettes; cigars. - A cigarette or cigar is provided with a self-lighting attachment comprising a fulminate and a fuse composition including wood flour or other finely ground combustible, a selfcombustible binder, such as nitrocellulose, being used for the fuse or fulminate, or both. The fuse is preferably prepared by treating fine wood flour of hickory, ash, or other non-resinous woods with a solution of potassium nitrate, drying, and mixing with a solution of nitrocellulose in ethyl acetate, benzol, acetone, butyl acetate, ethyl alcohol, &c. In place of, or mixed with, nitrocellulose, oil and resins such as cumar resin, gum copal, gum dammar, and various pitches, may be used mixed with oxidizing agents. A fulminate may be obtained by mixing together 4 parts potassium chlorate, 1 part sulphur, 3 parts ground glass, and ¢ part of red phosphorus, and then mixing two parts of the powder obtained with 1 part of nitrocellulose solution. A safety fulminate may be made by mixing together 18 parts potassium chlorate, 2 parts manganese dioxide, 2 parts iron peroxide, 1.7 parts bichromate of potash, 1 part suphur, and 4 parts ground glass, and then mixing 10 parts of the powder with 7 parts of nitrocellulose solution. A striking-surface for the safety fulminate may be composed of 12 parts glass powder mixed with 5 parts red phosphorus and cemented with 4 parts nitrooellulolse solution, darkened, if desired, with lampblack, red oxide, &c. The igniting-band is preferably made in ribbon form and is applied by means of nitrocellulose solution in double width at doublecigarette lengths along the paper web before this is coiled, so that when the cigarette rod is cut midway of the bands, cigarettes with an igniting- band 12 at one end are obtained as shown. The band may, however, be applied to the inside of the cigarette, or to the end, or in the form of a cap.
