Sterilizing by action of metals. - Water and other liquids are oligodynamically sterilized and activated by introduction into or passage through a vessel containing numerous bodies, not having any germ filtering effect, of regular or irregular shape and composed of oligodynamic metals or alloys, the bodies, and their carriers when employed, being arranged to divide up the liquid into a number of streams or parts and expose it to a large contact area. The oligodynamic materials include silver, copper, bismuth, antimony, manganese, nickel and aluminium, and their alloys. The bodies may be in the form of balls, short rods. or pieces of wire, and may be loose in the treatment vessel or inserted in a bag, cage or other holder, or may be fixed so as to maintain predetermined spaces therebetween. The bodies may be joined together to form a structure which is fixed in the vessel. The vessel, for example, may have tubes or other projections rising from its walls or bottom, and walls may be composed of or wholly or partly coated with the metals or alloys. The treatment may be preceded or followed by filtration, which may be in a filter containing the metals or alloys.. The sterilizing device may have heating and cooling means, and also means, such as a stirrer, pump, or a device for introducing a blast of air or other gas or vapour acting continuously or intermittently, to agitate or move the liquid. Reference is made to the prior use of vessels lined with, or containing wire formed from the metals or alloys, and of filters consisting thereof or coated therewith. Specifications 11938/10; 21332/11, [Class 81 (i), Disinfecting &c.] ; 157,280 and 180,973 are referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also the use of carriers coated or combined with the metals or alloys as the oligodynamic bodies; the use of bodies in the form of woven or plaited fabric or of fibrous or granular matter and the disposition of the bodies during the oligodynamic treatment to give a filtering effect. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
