[Convention, date], Apparatus for making films.-When making films, foils, bands, &c. from viscose and similar cellulose solutions, the film is stripped from the base before the coagulating-liquid has had time to pass through the coagulated film and to wet the base. By operating in this manner the base is kept free from impurities so that preliminary cleaning or treatment before the re-application of viscose &c. solution, is obviated. The point at which the film is stripped from the base depends on the speed of the base, the composition and temperature of the coagulating-liquid, and the characteristics of the cellulose solution; these are selected in such a manner that at the moment of removal the film is completely coagulated. The film is subsequently passed through the usual purifying and washing baths, and finally dried by passage over drying calenders; if desired it may be supported by another band carrying softening-agents prior to the drying. An example of suitable conditions is given.
