Abstract

275,670. I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.- Ges. Aug. 9, 1926, [Convention date]. Hydrogenation, destructive. - Carbonaceous substances are destructively hydrogenated in presence of catalysts, consisting of silver, gold. rhodium, osmium, iridium, ruthenium, palladium, platinum, or compounds of these metals, on supports of magnesia or magnesite. Other catalytic or inert substances may be added. The treatment may be effected in several stages, and in the liquid or vapour state. The hydrogen may be replaced by gases containing free hydrogen, or gases from which hydrogen is set free in the reaction vessel, e.g. methane which produces hydrogen on cracking, or water vapour which reacts with carbon monoxide or hydrocarbons to produce hydrogen. The gas may be forced through porous plates or layers supporting the carbonaceous material.. The apparatus in contact with the hot reacting materials is kept free from substances leading to the formation of methane and separative of carbon. In an example a middle oil. B.P. 200-325‹ C., from crude mineral oil is carried in a current of an excess of hydrogen at 450‹ C. and 200 atmospheres pressure over gold, magnesia, or ruthenium or magnesia. The lightcoloured product contains 80-90 per cent of low boiling substances, and may be used as a. motor fuel. The hydrogen is replenished or circuited for re-use. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) describes also the use of chromium oxide as a support and of lead, tin, or their compounds as catalysts. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
