Abstract

275,084. Georg, O. Jan. 26, 1927. Clutches, friction and claw; securing together machine elements for transmitting rotary motion. -To reduce shocks on the engagement of clutches, particularly in intermittently-operated heavy machinery such as presses, dies, and forging, bending, shearing, &c. machines, engagement of the main clutch rotates a screwed sleeve and moves it axially towards the final driven member of the clutch, between which and the sleeve is interposed an elastic friction ring. As applied to a claw clutch, the screwed sleeve 5, Fig. 1, engages an extension 4 of the driven pinion 2, loosely mounted on the shaft 1 of the driving- wheel 13. A ring 9, operable by a collar 10 to engage its clutch teeth 11 with teeth 12 on the wheel 13, is splined to the sleeve 5, which has a coned face 6, coacting with the expansible spring ring 7, and a cylindrical extension 14 to limit the expansion of the ring. Movement of the sleeve 5 to the left is smoothlv and non-reactively resisted by the elastic friction of the ring 7 on the cone 6 and on a cone 8 secured to the pinion 2. The spring ring 7 may also restore the sleeve to its original position. In a modification, the wheel 13 is connected to one end 17 of a contracting clutch coil 15, Fig. 2, the other end of which is secured to a clutch member 16 engageable with a cone 23 on the screwed sleeve 5. The conical surface 6 is formed on a separate member keyed in an annular groove in the sleeve 5 and bearing on a pressure ring 22. The sleeve 5 is restored on disengagement of the main clutch by a coil torsion spring 24 secured to the sleeve extension 14 and to the coned flange 8 rigid with the pinion 2.
