Abstract

274,140. Higginson, G. S. Jan. 12,1926. Vaporizers, atmospheric.-A wickless appliance for aromatizing the air of rooms comprises a substantially air-tight reservoir for a volatile liquid and an inner member dipping into the liquid. The reservoir is glazed on the whole or a substantial part of its inner surface and a small part of the surface of the inner member is unglazed so that the liquid is absorbed and evaporated from an unglazed upper part of the reservoir or inner member. Fig. 1 shows one form in which the inner member I is integral with the reservoir 0 and the whole of the internal and external surfaces g are glazed with the exception of the top surface and the surface of the small passage 3 through the member I. Absorption and evaporation of the liquid cannot take place until a valve 4 or its equivalent at the base of the passage 3 is opened. In a modification, Fig. 2, the inner member I rests on a washer 9 on the neck of the reservoir and is unglazed at its base. Evaporation takes place from a separate unglazed decorative top member D resting on the inner member. Fig. 3 shows one of several modifications in which the unglazed decorative member D is integral with the inner member I which may rest on a washer 9 or be cemented to the outer vessel. In other modifications the appliance may be adopted to be fastened to a wall or to rest on an adapter ring within a vase or bowl, or may comprise an outer vessel divided into separate compartments 'and having a separate inner member with top decorations resembling fruit or flowers to correspond with the perfume or the like in the particular compartment. The vessels may be formed of natural or artificial stone, brick, terra-cotta, or porcelain. The evaporative surfaces may be originally white and become coloured by means of a dye dissolved in the volatile liquid.
