Alternating - current induction machines; machines with two or more armatures; rotary machines.-In apparatus as described in the parent Specification, the wound rotor of the synchronous driving-motor is replaced by one or more permanent magnets. In Fig. 1 the synchronous motor mounted in a recess in the gyroscope 2, comprises the alternating-current stator 6 and a rotor 26 consisting of a number of permanent magnets carried by the gyroscope. The asynchronous starting motor has a similar stator 9 and a closed-circuit rotor 10. The stator of the synchronous motor may alternatively be disposed so as to surround the rotor and a soft iron ring may be disposed between the two so as to short-circuit the permanent magnet. Fig. 4 shows a form in which both motors are mounted within the same recess in the gyroscope. The rotor of the synchronous motor consists of a horse-shoe magnet 30 carried by the gyroscope 2 and magnetically short-circuited by a soft iron ring 31 provided on its inner surface with recesses carrying the armature 32 of the asynchronous motor. The stator 9 is carried by a sleeve 28 extending from the casing 1. The field of the permanent magnets may be strengthened when required by passing continuous-current through. the stator while the apparatus is at rest.
