Abstract

273,735. Uhde, G. F. July 2, 1926, [Convention date]. Catalytic agents, preparation and treatment of; ammonia, catalytic production of from nitrogen and hydrogen.-The synthesis of ammonia is performed with the use as catalyst of a mass containing iron, aluminium, carbon, and nitrogen, and an alkali metal or a compound thereof. The preferred alkali metal is potassium and the preferred compound thereof is the cyanide or the ferri- or ferro-cyanide. In an example, a solution of an aluminium salt, such as aluminium chloride or sulphate, is mixed with a solution of potassium ferrocyanide and the mixture is evaporated to dryness in vacuo. The dried and pulverized composition is then poured into the catalyst furnace and prepared for use by treatment at 300-450‹ C. with hydrogen, with or without nitrogen, preferably under pressure. The product may then be used to effect the synthesis of ammonia at about 400‹ C. under 100 atmospheres pressure. The catalyst may be reactivated, after continued use, by pulverizing it. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 253,122.
