Aerostats.-Balloon fabrics, particularly those formed of pieces of animal skin with or without a fabric backing are treated with a waterproofing or preserving agent after the whole material has been completed from its component parts, i.e. when the skin fabric has been prepared or after the skin and fabric have been glued but not varnished or doped, in which case the solution is applied on the fabric side. The proofing material may consist of dilute formaldehyde alone or in combination with softening or other materials. The solution may be applied to the whole fabric or to overlapping portions only.
